Be star surveys with CCD photometry II. NGC 1818 and its neighbouring cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud?
نویسنده
چکیده
As part of an ongoing photometric survey of young Magellanic Cloud clusters we identified Be stars in NGC 1818 and a nearby smaller cluster in the LargeMagellanic Cloud. The neighbouring cluster does not appear to contain any evolved stars, and its sparsely populated main sequence does not extend to stars as massive as in NGC 1818. Both clusters are younger than the surrounding field population, but the current data do not allow to conclude whether NGC 1818 is a binary cluster or not. The small cluster is more heavily reddened than NGC 1818 indicating the presence of differential reddening, leftover gas and dust from the star formation process, or a larger distance. NGC 1818 does not seem to be significantly affected by differential reddening. We find both clusters to be rich in Be stars The field only contains very few Be stars as one would expect for a predominantly older population. NGC 1818 contains almost as many Be stars as the slightly younger SMC cluster NGC 330, while NGC 2004, a young LMC cluster, has a lower Be star content. We discuss problems in comparing Be star fractions inMagellanic Cloud clusters and Galactic open clusters and possible constraints on Be star theories.

متن کاملThe initial mass function of the rich young cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We use deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the rich, young (∼20–45 Myrold) star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to derive its stellar mass function (MF) down to ∼ 0.15 M⊙. This represents the deepest robust MF thus far obtained for a stellar system in an extragalactic, low-metallicity ([Fe/H] ≃ −0.4 dex) environment. Combining our results with the published MF for masses ab...
متن کاملStellar luminosity functions of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10000 stars. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also ...
متن کاملWFPC2 Imaging of Young Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds
We have carried out Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 F160BW, F555W and F656N imaging of four young populous clusters: NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We report photometric results for these four clusters, including identification using photometric colours of the cluster Be star population. We present theoretical WFPC2 and bro...
